Reliant Home Health Supports SAWS and MedDropSA

Program Safely Collects Expired or Unwanted Medications

San Antonio, TX—January 31, 2012– Reliant Home Health, a leader in home health care services based in San Antonio, Texas, is proud to support MedDropSA and San Antonio Water System (SAWS) in their efforts to collect and dispose of unwanted or expired over-the-counter and prescription medications.

Reliant Home Health works closely with hundreds of seniors in the San Antonio area who may unknowingly have large amounts of unused or expired medications. These can pose a risk to the environment when flushed down the toilet or thrown away and dumped in a landfill.

Flushing medications may harm our local waterways because wastewater treatment plants are not equipped to treat them.

“We’re in an ideal position to educate and assist our clients about a safe way of disposing unwanted medications,” explained Judy Wilson, RN, BSN, Executive Vice President of Business Development of Reliant Home Health. “Many people don’t understand the danger of simply flushing or throwing them away.”

Additionally, unused and readily accessible prescription medications have the potential to be misused and abused, especially by teens.  Prescription medications are the most commonly abused substance in the U.S. More young people age 12-17 abuse prescription drugs than any illegal drugs except marijuana. Research shows the majority of these drugs come straight from the medicine cabinet.

On February 11, 2012, SAWS will host a drop off at the City of San Antonio’s South Central District Center located at 4719 S. Zarzamora from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

“Assisting SAWS by educating our seniors about this this worthwhile program is another example of Reliant’s commitment to the San Antonio community,” said Wilson. “We find it a privilege to work with this organization.”
